When we look back on 2016, it's easy to get bogged down in some objectively bad (okay, terrible) moments. If you want to remember the truly good moments of this year, though, look no further than the stories of these 18 amazing dogs.
18 Dogs Who Totally Won 2016
This dog who took its owner’s car for a joyride into a Walmart.
In West Virginia this summer, two dogs literally drove a car into a Walmart (as in, "crashed into the outside wall of a Walmart"). The low-speed accident didn't severely damage the car or the building and no people (or pets) were hurt, so the dog driver didn't have to do time or even file a report, but he has the best story to tell from now until forever.
This dog who brought home a pound of marijuana.
When Miley, a black lab from Mississippi, went out for a bathroom break in March, she came home with a white paper bag full of about a pound of marijuana, which was packaged to sell. Miley's humans called the police right away about her find, but her input to the investigation stopped there since, you know, she's a dog.
This adorable dog who wandered into a half-marathon and finished 7th.
Ludivine, a bloodhound from Alabama, wandered away from her home and into an actual half-marathon race. She waited at the starting line and then ran the race with the human runners and ended up placing seventh with a time of 1 hour, 32 minutes and 56 seconds.
This dog who led police on chase across San Francisco.
A black Chihuahua who was later named Ponch led what San Francisco police described as a "high speed" chase across the Bay Bridge in April, just a few days too late to possibly be an elaborate April Fools hoax. It took two cops on motorcycles and another in a car to finally apprehend the elusive pup, whose blank name tag was appropriately badass: black with a silver skull.
This stuffed dog who got lost in outer space.
In April, Fluffy, the mascot for Morecambe Bay Primary School and Midland Hotel in Lancashire, England, was attached to helium balloons and launched into space, which is an impressive thing for a stuffed animal to do. When the experiment was over (i.e. the balloons popped), the equipment was recovered, but Fluffy was missing in duty.
This dog who learned to paint and took the art world by storm.
Black lab golden retriever Dagger II (aka "Dog Vinci") is a better artist than most humans. After he had to give up his dream of becoming a service dog, Dagger discovered a love (and talent) for painting and now his work sells for $50-$100 per canvas.
This dog who won reelection as the mayor of a small town.
Politics have been an eternal pit of suck in 2016, but one election actually went the right way. Duke, a Great Pyrenees in Cormorant, Minnesota, won his town's Mayoral election for the second time in a row, with nearly 100 percent of the vote.
This dog who people thought was a bear.
In January, the people of the internet got into a heated debate over Bounce, a Pomeranian-mix that looks a lot like a baby bear. When Bounce's family dropped her off for doggie daycare while on vacation in Nashville, the employee at the daycare noticed how bear-like she was and texted a picture of her to his friends. The rest is Reddit/viral internet history.
This service dog who had an adorable reaction to meeting Disney’s Pluto.
As part of their training, service dogs have to spend time in very crowded places, like Disney parks. When Ace went to Disneyland for training, he met Pluto and adorably fandogged out and won the internet.
This dog who gets loved by a mailman ever dang day.
Who says mailmen and dogs don't get along? This mailman in New Zealand stops by German shepherd Kyza's house every single day (even if there's no mail) just to say hi and give her a belly rub. Aww!
This ornery dog who was found wandering park wearing shirt and pants.
When a dog was found in Washington state wearing no identification, but a pair of pants and a festive shirt. People were naturally intrigued. The famously unhappy animal (but look at that outfit — you'd be unhappy too) became a Twitter sensation last week as the search for his family began.
This dog, who’s obsessed with Santa, freaks out when she meets him.
Kya, a dog from Florida, freaking loves Santa Claus. When her family first adopted her, they gave her a cheap Santa toy to chew on and it quickly became her favorite, so when we met the big guy in person at a mall this year, she was downright awestruck.
This dog who interrupted a live newscast while on a riding lawn mower, NBD
A reporter in Malakoff, TX was broadcasting a story about damage after a tornado when her story was completely derailed (in a good way) by a dog sitting on a riding lawn mower. Andrea Martinez interrupted her own report to tell the cameraman to get a shot of the perfectly-positioned, lawn mower-riding dog and the whole internet is glad she did.
This dog whose billionaire owner bought him eight iPhone 7s
In September, the world was going crazy for the iPhone 7. Humans spent hours in line to get the coveted tech. Coco the Alaskan malamute didn't have to stress though, since her owner, Chinese billionaire Wang Sicong, bought her EIGHT iPhones that day and let her brag it all over her verified (naturally) social accounts.
This stray dog and her puppies who got adopted at a bachelor party
Most bachelor parties don't have puppies as party favors, but one in Tennessee this year did, for the best reason. The groom-to-be and his friends were on a five-day getaway when they met a stray dog and later, her seven puppies. Naturally, they found homes for all of the dogs, each taking a puppy home as a momento/new forever friend from the trip.
This dog who was crowned the ugliest dog ever
The search for the ugliest dog ever is over: Chinese crested Chihuahua Sweepee Rambo officially holds the title. The 17-year-old, blind dog won recognition (and the world's hearts) in June.
This lucky dog whose owner chose him over an arranged marriage
Karishma Walia, an analyst in Gurgaon, India, earned cheers from dog-lovers worldwide when she called off an arranged marriage when her husband-to-be said her dog would have to go. Right choice, Karishma.
This service dog who posed for a sweet photo in a school yearbook
In May, a middle school in Louisiana made headlines in the best way when it invited a student's longtime service dog to have his picture taken for the yearbook. And not just in a group photo; he got his own spot, alphabetically right next to his own. Aww!
