Dog Food Recipes Homemade

Making homemade dog food is a healthy and inexpensive way to feed your beloved pet. Many homemade dog food recipes use the same ingredients that you use to cook for your family, so you won't even have to go out of your way to begin preparing your dog's food at home. Before you start feeding your dog homemade food, you should consult your veterinarian for advice on ingredients, preparation and portion control.

Poultry is a favorite food for dogs, and this recipe can be made from your own leftovers. Combine about 1 cup of chopped boiled, broiled or baked poultry with ½ cup each of boiled or steamed mixed vegetables and brown rice. Stir the ingredients together and add 3 to 4 tbsp. of unsalted chicken broth for extra flavor. Serve immediately.

To make one meal for a small to medium-sized dog, mix together ¼ cup each of cooked peas and lentils, ½ cup each of brown rice and ground chicken or turkey and 1 tsp. of canola oil. Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator. Double the recipe for a large dog.

This recipe can be adjusted to feed a dog of any size. Combine 1 cup of cooked barley with 1 to 1 ½ cups of roasted chicken. Add 1 tbsp. of plain yogurt and ½ cup each of cooked green beans and cooked shredded carrots. Stir the ingredients together and serve immediately or refrigerate.

Beef is loaded with nutrients for your dog. Combine 1 lb. of cooked ground round with one small package of cooked broccoli and carrots. Add ½ cup of plain cooked oatmeal and 2 tbsp. of cottage cheese. Divide the mixture up into single-sized servings and store in the refrigerator or freezer.

This beef and rice recipe is sure to become one of your dog's favorites. Combine 1 lb. of cooked ground beef with 1 ½ cups of cooked rice. Add 1 cup each of a cooked peas and carrots mix and cooked oatmeal. Add 1 tsp. of garlic powder for flavor. Store individual servings in plastic bags in the freezer.

To make homemade beef dog treats, dump the contents of two small jars of beef baby food into a large bowl. Add 2 ¾ cups of whole wheat flour, 1 egg, 10 tbsp. of water, ½ cup powdered milk, 6 tbsp. of vegetable oil and 1 tsp. of salt. Mix thoroughly, and then knead the mixture for 3 minutes. Roll out the dough to about ½ inch thick. Cut with a bone-shaped cookie cutter and bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for 20 to 25 minutes. Use liver, lamb or chicken baby food instead of beef, if desired.
