Chinese Dog Breeds
In general, dog breeds that originate from China make loyal companion dogs. They range in size from the toy Chinese Crested to the powerful, medium sized Chow Chow. The coats range from long to almost non-existent. All of the Chinese dog breeds are of ancient origin.
Shar-Peis are medium sized dogs with short coats and wrinkled skin. This is an ancient breed that was originally used as a farm dog.
The medium-sized Chow Chow's origins date back to the Han Dynasty. A black tongue and lion-like features are key features of this breed.
Chinese Cresteds are toy sized dogs that come in two variations. The Hairless has hair on its head, tail, and paws. The Powderpuff is covered in soft hair.
Pekingese dogs are an ancient breed and they appear in art work of the Tang Dynasty. It is a small dog well suited to apartment life. Their long coats require regular grooming and brushing.
The name of this lovable little breed translates into "little lion," however, there's nothing ferocious about these affectionate dogs. They were bred solely to be loyal companions, and this housedog enjoys nothing more than following their chosen humans around wherever they go. Like the Pekingese, their long hair requires regular brushing, so be prepared.
Choosing a Chinese Dog Breed
Prior to selecting a Chinese dog breed, research the breed's characteristics thoroughly to see if it will fit into your lifestyle. Adopt one from a rescue or animal shelter, or be sure to locate a reputable breeder.
