When you own a powerful chewer, it can be very difficult to find safe products that allow your dog to chew to his heart's content. When everything else fails, try these on for size!
Raw Meaty Bones
Raw meaty bones carry a tremendous amount of benefits for your dog, including keeping them well occupied, providing mental stimulation, cleaning their teeth and improving overall health. It's important to ensure the bones you give your dog are truly raw and haven't been cooked or processed. Ask your local butcher for femur bones or knuckles. Most dogs truly enjoy raw bones and will spend hours sucking out the marrow and cleaning them of gristle and meat. The bigger your dog is, the bigger the bone should be. Only give large, powerful chewers weight-bearing bones so they will not shatter while being enjoyed.
Shed antlers from a deer, elk or moose are extremely durable and particularly difficult to destroy. They offer many of the same benefits of a raw bone but typically last longer. Ensure that your antler comes from someone who prepares them for use by dogs; don't just simply pick some up out in the woods.
Himalayan Dog Chews
Himalayan Dog Chews are an exceptionally unique and all-natural chewy made from yak's or cow's milk and salt. The end product is extremely long-lasting, durable and very high value. Most dogs absolutely adore them and yours is likely to be no exception! While these chews can be a little bit difficult to find, you can order them online from a variety of vendors.
KONGs are an old stand-by for every dog from powerful chewers to puppies to dogs that just like to carry toys around. KONGs can be stuffed with a variety of treats, such as yogurt, apple sauce, wet dog food, cheese or peanut butter, and either given to your dog directly or frozen for an additional challenge. KONGs keep your dog working for the goodies inside and, even when empty, provide a fun and safe chewing experience.
Goughnuts are about as durable as you can get in a dog toy and still be considered "fun." These toys are made with police dogs, working dogs and extremely powerful dogs in mind. They have an inner core coated in an outer layer. When the inner core is exposed through the outer layer, you can send the toy back to Goughnuts and they replace it for your dog's safety. What's not to love?
